Need A Heating Oil Tank? What You Should Know About Installation

If you're building a new home that will have an oil-fired furnace, you'll need to also have a heating oil tank installed. If you've never had to plan a heating oil tank installation before, you might not be sure of the things that you need to consider. Before you finalize the plans for the tank installation, there are some things that you need to think about. Here are some of the things that you should consider as you plan for your tank installation.

Interior Or Exterior Installation

When you choose a heating oil tank, you'll have the choice to install it indoors or outdoors. If you install it indoors, it's typically placed in the basement with a filler neck that extends outside above ground level to fill the tank at deliveries. Interior tanks are protected from the elements, but it leaves you with a fuel oil tank in the basement, which can concern some homeowners.

Exterior tanks are installed outside the house but close enough that you can run a fuel line into the home. When you consider exterior tank installation, you'll have to decide between above or below-ground installation. Installing the tank below ground requires excavation in addition to running the lines, and above-ground installation typically requires the installation of a concrete pad.

Distance From The House

Another important thing to consider is the distance that the tank is located from the house. There should be several feet between the tank and your home. The exact required distance is different from state to state, so you'll have to talk to your tank installation contractor about what your state requires.

Additionally, it should be installed where you have sufficient space on all four sides of the concrete pad. There should be no obstructions or encroachments on the tank installation location for safety purposes.

Protection From Hazards

When you choose the installation location for your oil tank, you also need to consider any potential hazards. For example, if the tank is installed within proximity of a sloped roof, you need to take steps to mitigate the risk of snow falling off that roof onto the tank. Talk with your tank installation contractor about the benefits of building an open-air shelter over the tank to create a roof barrier against any overhead hazards.

These are a few of the things you need to think about when you are installing a tank at your home. Talk with a tank installation contractor in your area about these key considerations and more information that you need to think about to install the tank safely and correctly.
